Apexis Shards: An Endgame for Questers?

Currently, there's a system that really only seems partially implemented on the Beta, but it's kind of a fascinating concept, and could be amazing if pulled off well.

Once you hit level 100, and you've got a tier 3 garrison, you'll start getting daily quests (yes, there is at least one!) that allow you to choose one of two locations (it's always Shattrath or a place in Frostfire Ridge currently, but I expect this will change) to go mess things up in. The enemies in these areas are rather tough for someone still in leveling greens, but the interesting thing is that they drop a new currency: Apexis Shards. Likewise, completing the quest there will yield a ton of these shards.

Then, at Warspear or Stormshield (the Ashran capitals,) you can find Arrakoa (currently they only show up at the Horde base, but I expect this will be fixed before long) who will sell gear for these shards. It appears that there will be multiple tiers of Apexis gear as well, though I don't know exactly how that progression will work.

There's a lot of potential here.

In Mists of Pandaria, daily quests began to award Valor Points, which had before then always been in the domain of dungeons and raids. The rewards per quest were pretty tiny - usually 5. But given how many dailies one did, especially in early Mists, it actually added up to a pretty decent amount. Then add in the fact that you could only get rep with the various factions through daily quests and you could only buy Valor gear from those reputations' quartermasters, and it almost made Valor gear seem like it was more for people who preferred to quest than people who wanted to run instances.

I don't really know what the plan is for valor points in Warlords, but it looks like they've split off Apexis Shards as a currency that is purely for that outdoor questing content. I haven't analyzed the stats on the Apexis gear all that much (and it's likely to change,) but you could even imagine having gear designed more for questing - perhaps adding in a lot more versatility to help the squishy stay alive, or having sets with set bonuses that are more about sustainability and survival than purely maximizing dps.

Keeping an eye on this.
