Well, for fans of Critical Role, we're getting very close to an exciting new chapter - Campaign 3 is about to begin, with new characters we'll probably sob over, new diabolical (or demonic, or otherwise evil) plots to untangle, and the return of this show that provides tons of entertainment even as we play our own campaigns.
I got into Critical Role around the time that the second campaign started, so I watched weekly episodes of that while I caught up on the first campaign mostly through podcasts. Campaign two ended at a lower level, though because we had seen the campaign from the very beginning, it had a pretty satisfying conclusion, with only a handful of threads remaining that might make for epilogue-like one-shots, similar to campaign one's.
The campaign will take place, or at least start, on the continent of Marquet, which was briefly visited in the first campaign, but has, for the most part, been only sketchily fleshed out (much as Wildemount had been in the first campaign.) Marquet is largely a desert region, which will be a nice change of pace (I've always enjoyed desert settings.)
I'm very curious to see what kind of characters people are playing. I've noticed that, apart from Pike in the first campaign, people haven't played heavily-armored characters. Though both campaigns have a character multiclass into Paladin, no one has started the campaign off with that class (though I believe that prior to Percy, during their home game, Taliesin Jaffe's character was a dragonborn paladin.)
Naturally, all I can do is project my own class preferences. Campaign one did have an Artificer in Taryon Darrington, but it wasn't until the epilogue game with the Darrington Brigade that Sam Riegel was able to play him with the actual Artificer rules. I'd love to see someone pick up that class, which I think has both fun flavor and mechanics.
I also think it would be interesting if the party's primary healer were a Druid rather than a Cleric. Tasha's Cauldron of Everything added subclasses and an expanded spell list to really enhance a Druid's ability to take that role. After having two (admittedly very different) Clerics in campaign two, it'd be cool to see a different take.
Given how frequently players seemed to be wowed by Beauregard's monk abilities, I wouldn't be shocked to see someone playing a Monk in campaign 3 as well.
Matt Mercer has clearly been getting more comfortable homebrewing subclasses, so I wouldn't be shocked to see characters using unique subclasses, and maybe another crack at the Blood Hunter.
I think the story of the Mighty Nein was, if anything, more compelling than that of Vox Machina (for one, the threats were far more built into the stories of the characters) though I would also like to see a campaign get up into the super-high levels, assuming Matt Mercer is willing to DM for such a tier. As someone running a campaign that will definitely let players get at least to level 19 (and obviously we're going to take it to 20,) there's a nice practical effect in letting viewers see a world-class DM building adventures for a party of that power level.
Coming along with the third campaign, we also now know of both the upcoming Call of the Netherdeep campaign module as well as apparently a video game that is in the works, not to mention The Legend of Vox Machina animated show coming to Amazon Prime.
With less than a week away, my mind keeps asking: is it Thursday yet?
