Wizards of the Coast presented a whole bunch of announcements (including the slate of MTG sets through next year). Among them, of course, were a few announcements about D&D's future.
The first thing is One D&D - this is what they're calling the evolution of D&D's 5th Edition. Rather than releasing a "new edition," they are going to be building on 5th Edition, with all new stuff being backwards compatible (we'll see how that works out exactly). A couple things of note:
D&D is working on a digital 3D battle map system using the Unreal engine, which they say will be versatile and customizable, though naturally this seems like something that will take a while to build and flesh out. Using digital minis and a virtual tilt-shift lens, the intention is for this to feel like a digital tabletop.
Now, new books!
The Dragonlance adventure coming later this year is now called Dragonlance: Shadow of the Dragon Queen. There is also a board game that is releasing alongside the adventure, but it is not required to play the adventure. Also, the alternative art, which depicts Lord Soth and his black rose on the back, is really, really good.
Next year, we're getting several books:
Keys from the Golden Vault is going to be a heist-themed adventure anthology.
Bigby Presents: Glory of the Giants looks like it will be a giant-themed sourcebook similar to Fizban's Treasury of Dragons.
Phandelver Campaign (I suspect it'll get a different name) expands the popular Lost Mines of Phandelver into a full published campaign, continuing the story on to higher levels.
The Book of Many Things looks like it will be the next "of Everything"-style rules expansion book, with things for DMs and players.
Finally, Planescape will be getting a setting book in the fall of 2023.
The details on these books were... well, they just gave us the names. But still, that's some exciting stuff to see. I've become fairly obsessed with Planescape recently, so I'm really eager to see what they do with it in 5th Edition.
I'm also very curious to see what we get in the Book of Many Things - as always, I'm hoping that we'll get some Artificer love.
