Another leak before Blizzcon: Overwatch, Blizzard's new team-based First-person-shooter will be available for the PS4 and Xbox One. This suggests that all versions of the game will be buy-to-play, rather than free-to-play. That means a bigger investment at the start, but you should have access to all the heroes (hopefully) out of the box.
Presumably they'll be releasing patches and possibly DLC, which in this modern era is feasible on consoles as well as PCs. It's nice to hear, especially for those of us who play our other Blizzard games on Mac (myself included) which will apparently not run Overwatch (which might be a first for Blizzard, as the company began its life, if I recall correctly, as specifically a Mac game producer.)
Blizzard has been trying out the console waters of late, with Diablo III apparently better on console than computers (though part of that might have been that the original console release for the game incorporated the Reaper of Souls changes that profoundly improved the game.)
Still, there's nothing to indicate that there will be anything like a solo campaign for the game, especially given that it's already in beta (given that it's in beta on PC but also launching for the consoles, this perhaps allows for a slight glimmer of hope for us Mac users.)
The question, though, is whether a game of this ilk - based entirely around competitive multiplayer (though I imagine there might be a VS AI option like in Heroes of the Storm) - will get people to drop the typical 60 bucks for a game that most new releases on console get.
I'm much more a fan of long games with tons of content, rather than fast-paced competition with other players, so it's still not really in my wheelhouse. I have enjoyed Heroes of the Storm, even dropping a bit of real money on a couple of heroes, but it's not compelling to me the way that an RPG is.
I would have loved to see what their original plan was for "Titan," which really seems to be the pile of ashes that Overwatch flew out of. If the game's successful, perhaps Blizzard will take another look at it.
