We were first shown a cinematic in which Sylvanas ascends the Frozen Throne and takes her fight to Bolvar.
Attacking Bolvar, Sylvanas employs some her new death magic to overwhelm him, binding him with chains of dark magic. Taking the Helm of Domination off his head, Sylvanas holds it, seeming like she is about to put it on her own head and become the Lich Queen.
But no: instead, she tears it apart, and in so doing, a massive rift shatters above Icecrown Citadel, opening the way to the Shadowlands.
The gameplay trailer has many tantalizing details - the various zones are apparently different afterlives that exist within the Shadowlands, and vary profoundly - with a feywild-like realm, a Titanic realm of Bastion, a vampire-filled gothic area, and some others.
There are lots of details filtering in here, so I'll update as we go.
