Fizban's Treasury of Dragons - New D&D Leak

Well, due to be announced tomorrow, but leaked through some hidden image urls, we know what the other book coming out in 2021 will be: Fizban's Treasury of Dragons.

All we have to go on is a cover image, but the title does reveal a few things. First off: Fizban is a character from the Dragonlance setting. He is an avatar of the god Paladine, who notably has as an alternate name "Bah'mut," which suggests to me that he's basically the equivalent of Bahamut (not sure if they've ever made that canonical.)

Judging from the title, it could be tempting to think this was a Dragonlance sourcebook, but I think that the lack of a specific mention of Dragonlance means we're probably looking at more of a "Monster Manual IV" situation. For the general rules expansions, we got Volo's Guide to Monsters, Xanathar's Guide to Everything, Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes, and then Tasha's Cauldron of Everything. Following that pattern of "monsters" alternating with "new subclasses and other rules expansion stuff," it would make sense for this book, if it keeps with that pattern, to focus primarily on giving us a whole bunch of new monsters to fight - and presumably very dragon-focused.

Volo's and Mordenkainen's both also came with new playable races, and the UA with new "draconic options" including variants on the Dragonborn (that I really hope I can convert my Eldritch Knight to when it becomes official, because it's so much better) could easily slip into this book as well.

However!

We did get an Unearthed Arcana a few months ago with a pair of draconic-themed subclasses (for Rangers and Monks.) So it's possible this will break from the mold a little and include not just the usual monster book stuff, but also new subclasses and spells.

Dragons are, of course, the ultimate iconic fantasy monsters - more or less synonymous with the genre. I welcome a big dragon-focused book to read through and add some cool stuff to my games.

I'm glad to see WotC stepping up the release of content for 5th Edition in recent years. I appreciate their dedication to quality over quantity, but the more I've gotten into the game, the more I want to see the weird and niche stuff.
